Slideshare Introduced
Slideshare’s website claims to be the “world’s largest community for sharing presentations” with “over 25 million monthly visitors.” Slideshare is rated 7 on the Top 100 Tools for Learning 2009, according to a survey of learning professionals from around the world. Slideshare’s features include uploading powerpoint slides, Adobe PDF portfolios, and word documents. You can add MP3 audio to create a webinar and share documents publicly or privately. Students can upload documents for presentations. Slideshows can be embedded into blogs and websites. Slideshare is an avenue to share resources for instruction and business presentations with friends and colleagues. Anyone can review previously recorded presentations. Slideshare members can participate and vote in contests, and share information on social networks, blogs and bookmarking sites.

Slideshare - Strengths, Weaknesses, Threats
Strengths: Slideshare is a free resource for sharing presentations. Anyone can view and upload files without pre-registering. Registering does give you the benefit of access to the community features like being part of a social network that shares information, favorites, and comments. Registration and upload are quick and easy. Whatever your topic of interest, Slideshare has a range of presentations on the same or similar topics. There is a comments section for the Slideshare community to give you feedback and critique your uploaded presentations. You can also use the comments section to provide feedback to other members of the Slideshare community. Slideshare uses Creative Commons licensing to address copyright and plagiarism issues. Creative Commons provides a structure for authors to share their work freely in the community and at the same time maintain copyrights. There are six licenses. The attributes of these licenses are described in the chart below and the cites for more information about Creative Commons are listed in references.

Weakness /threats: The quality of presentations in Slideshare vary depending on the author. Not all Slideshare content is educational. Some presentations may not be suitable for certain age groups. According to some of the reviews on-line, when presentations are uploaded, certain characteristics may change such as font formats or lose of links to the web. When I tested a link in a presentation about Creative Commons, the link did work. When I downloaded one of my presentations, I did not have any format changes. Plagiarism and intellectual property rights are a major threat that slide share addresses with their terms of service and creative commons described in more detail below.

Creative Commons
According to it’s website, Creative Commons is a nonprofit corporation that provides free licenses and other legal tools to mark creative work and share, remix, and use commercially. Authors have an avenue to share their work for free with conditions. When uploading files to Slideshare, the author can select creative commons copyright and when downloading presentations, the user agrees to the terms of service including adherence to intellectual property rights and complying with terms and conditions in Creative Commons.

CREATIVE COMMONS LICENSES CHART

AS OF 2/22/2010

ATTRIBUTION.png
Attribution cc by
This license lets others distribute, remix, tweak, and build upon your work, even commercially, as long as they credit you for the original creation. This is the most accommodating of licenses offered, in terms of what others can do with your works licensed under Attribution.

ATTRIBUTION_SHARE_ALIKE.png

Attribution
Share Alike
Cc by-sa
This license lets others remix, tweak, and build upon your work even for commercial reasons, as long as they credit you and license their new creations under the identical terms. This license is often compared to open source software licenses. All new works based on yours will carry the same license, so any derivatives will also allow commercial use.
ATTRIBUTION_DERIVATIVES.png
Attribution
No Derivatives
Cc by-nd
This license allows for redistribution, commercial and non-commercial, as long as it is passed along unchanged and in whole, with credit to you.
ATTRIBUTION_NONCOMMERCIAL.png
Attribution
Noncommercial
Cc by-nc
This license lets others remix, tweak, and build upon your work non-commercially, and although their new works must also acknowledge you and be non-commercial, they don’t have to license their derivative works on the same terms.

ATTRIBUTION_NONCOMMERCIAL_SHARE.png
Attribution
Noncommercial
Share Alike
Cc by-nc-sa
This license lets others remix, tweak, and build upon your work non-commercially, as long as they credit you and license their new creations under the identical terms. Others can download and redistribute your work just like the by-nc-nd license, but they can also translate, make remixes, and produce new stories based on your work. All new work based on yours will carry the same license, so any derivatives will also be non-commercial in nature
ATTRIBUTION_NONCOMMERICIAL_NO_DERIVATIVES.png
Attribution
Noncommercial
No derivative
Cc by nc-nd
This license is the most restrictive of our six main licenses, allowing redistribution. This license is often called the “free advertising” license because it allows others to download your works and share them with others as long as they mention you and link back to you, but they can’t change them in any way or use them commercially.

Slide Share - Opportunities and Possible Uses:
The major use is for uploading presentations to a website. This is essentially a free archive or safe storage for a teacher and student to store their work. The Slideshare site offers students and educators access to new information and ideas for presentations. Presentations that are downloadable can be re-mixed and re-used in other presentations. Through access to presentations from the entire world, presenters can learn how to create strong presentations by reviewing and evaluating other presentations. Slideshare can be used as a learning assessment tool for many objectives including addressing plagiarism and copyright issues with students.

Learning Objective- Slideshare
Blooms Taxonomy: publish- Application
Assigned student groups will publish their collaborative power point about the future of simulation in healthcare education in slideshare.
A publishing rubric will provide students with an assessment guide in the process of uploading their collaborative document to slideshare. The students will be vested in a product that will be displayed to the public and shared with their fellow students, educators and other professionals interested in this topic. Students and other viewers can post comments. Working in slideshare can give students and the instructor an opportunity to discuss copyright, plagiarisms and creative commons in terms of their published collaborative document.
